KNIT OR CROCHET
I would love you and your friends and knitting circles to make warm blankets and clothes to send out the Middle East where there are heavy snows and bitter winters.
Thousands of displaced people and refugees die in camps and informal settlements during winter simply because there isn't enough humanitarian aid to keep them warm This is an ongoing appeal, and your contributions will be saving lives this winter. Items include:
- Blankets for adults, new mothers and the elderly (these can be wool)
- Baby clothes including hats/bonnets, mittens, socks, cardigans
- Children's clothes including jumpers, cardigans, mittens, scarves, hats, socks
- Adult clothes including hats, scarves, jumpers, cardigans, shawls, socks
I ask people to make clothing items or blankets that people here would use or give as gifts and which are universal as opposed to items like "fish and chip vests" that we wouldn't choose to dress our own babies in if we were given the choice.
Strong colours are recommended over pastels and whites as it is difficult for many displaced people to wash their clothes.
It would also be really helpful if you could label each garment with a size.
To add an even more personal touch, some of our knitters have been attaching beautiful labels in Arabic which say "handmade for you with love". You can download and print these LABELS HERE, and they work specially well when stuck on pretty paper and laminated.
